Definition
Let
- : Random sample, with joint pdf/pmf ,
- : Statistic, with pdf/pmf
Then is a sufficient statistic for
If and only if
- does not depend upon
Remark
To prove is a sufficient statistic, we must show that does not depend on , i.e., does not have any terms in it.
A sufficient statistic captures all the information about contained in the sample, so the ratio of joint to marginal densities should be free of ( TODO why?).
Also, a sufficient statistic does not require the random variables to be independent.
